Denali Boys bike a Good Value but requires mechanical attention, May 1, 2008 By This review is from: GMC Denali Boy's 24-Inch Road Bike (Sports) This size bike is hard to find and so you are limited as to what you can reasonably find if you have a 9 year old, like our son, who wants to get out on the road and do some fast miles. The bike came in bad shape and it needed lots of mechanical attention, I'm a professional bike mechanic and founder of Bikes Not Bombs an organization that recycles 5,000 bikes per year to developing countries and works with inner city youth and adults in the Boston area. I knew, by the other reviews, that I was going to have to work on it. I also knew that I was going to retrofit it with a lot of different parts.
So here goes. The frt deraillure was a mess, the spring had come off its tension post and getting it back on required grinding a v notch into an old screw driver; the wheels were very out of true side to side as well as round; as was reviewed by many, the brakes are pretty cheap, however its really the fashion that they are secured by not their quality so much, but I just bought some... Very Pleased!, October 19, 2007 By Amazon Verified Purchase This review is from: GMC Denali Boy's 24-Inch Road Bike (Sports) My wife & I are avid cyclists, so for my son's 9th birthday, we bought him his own road bike! I am very pleased with the bike! I am somewhat of a bike mechanic, so putting it together was very easy, and simple. I did however, have to adjust the brakes, and now they work wonderfully. I also added brake levers on the handle bars (cross inline levers), and that was a great safety net. I also replaced the two tires with 24" x 1" wheel chairs tires, and tubes, and they fit and work wonderfully. All total, I have spent less than $175.00 on his road bike, and We are very pleased with it!

Great value, highly recommended for the 8-14 group, August 5, 2007 By Amazon Verified Purchase This review is from: GMC Denali Boy's 24-Inch Road Bike (Sports) This is really the only option for a kid who's outgrown a starter bike and enjoys longer rides. That said, it's a really good option. Got this one for my boy, 11 and the girls version for my 8 year old.
Tip: use Amazon Prime for shipping these... it pays for itself!
Bad:
- you'll need to do some basic adjustments like brakes, check and tighten the various mouting and adjustment bolts etc. This is typical in this price range, same problem you'd have with a walmart bike, but if you're not a bike mechanic it could be a challenge.
- the reach to the handlebars was "ok" for my 11 year old, plus it's a challenge using road style brakes, so I swapped the road racing bars for the upright kind that flare towards you a bit. Also had to switch the brake levers for this. Again, not something most parents could / would / should do but it makes the bike great for my boy.
